Interrogating desire and the bodies that inhabit the fringes of collective rituals, Mário Veloso carves out a cinematic territory where the traditions and landscapes of Northern Portugal are pierced by secret and dissident impulses. A filmmaker from Braga, trained at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School and Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola, he investigates the zones of silence and the imaginaries of both individual and collective identity and memory. His artistic path, defined by a rigorous and independent creative process, includes Rio Torto (2019), Fora da Bouça // Ours is the Wasteland (2021), and Chuvas de Verão // Summer Rains (2024). These works have established a prestigious international circuit, with screenings at festivals such as San Sebastián, Doclisboa, and IndieLisboa, where his visual language has been met with critical acclaim. Combining on-set agility with a singular authorial voice, he has also collaborated as an assistant director on over twenty national and international projects. It is within the duality between the technical precision of large-scale productions and the freedom of his own artistic intervention that Mário Veloso establishes his method—driven by curiosity and by everything that, in the observation of the world, refuses to be revealed.
